Creepy History
On December 20, 1968, two teenagers were shot and killed in their car with a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol. David Faraday, 17, and his 16-year-old date, Betty Lou Jensen, were the victims of the first Zodiac Killer murder. Only David survived. For the time, this new serial killer had a low victim count compared to the others that were around at the time. Charles Manson killed eight, and Ted Bundy killed thirty-six. The Zodiac also sent taunting letters to the San Francisco Chronicle. They usually started out with, “This is the Zodiac Speaking” and often had sight crosshairs. In one letter, he claimed to love killing because “Man is the most dangerous game.”
The Zodiac had five confirmed victims in all. The main suspect was convicted child molester Arthur Leigh Allen. He owned boots identical to the Zodiac’s, claimed his favorite short story was “The Most Dangerous Game,” which the Zodiac had referenced in a letter, and was picked out in a photo lineup by one of the Zodiac’s few surviving victims. Before detectives could make enough of a case to charge him, he died of a heart attack. The Zodiac also attacked two other couples and killed a taxi driver. The second couple he attacked, the male lived like the first. Sadly, the other couple both died during his attack. The Zodiac Killer was one of the most infamous serial killers in U.S. History.
